NonFiction Now Conference, Melbourne Nov 2012

At the recent NonFiction Now conference held on the central Melbourne campus of RMIT, I presented as part of the panel "Based on a true story." Screenwriters Craig Batty and myself, along with photographers Pauline Anastasiou, Shane Hulbert and Bronek Kozka explored the notion of representing truth in visual storytelling. I was impressed and deeply moved by the still and video work of the RMIT photographers. Their thinking about and approach to 'story' is enlightening for screenwriters who perhaps find themselves veering too often towards linear narrative.

This was my first time in Melbourne since 1996. After the conference, I got to visit friends, sit on their porch, and honour Tim Michin by drinking white wine in the sun, watching colourful parrots play in the trees. I love visiting Australia.
